DESCRIPTION:The MNHBC Jazz Student “SIT-IN” Performance Series \nis funded by a grant from the \nMetropolitan Regional Arts Council and the St. Paul Cultural Star. \n \nWhat is “Sitting-In”?  \nSitting in is not the same as a “jam session”. A musician’s definition of “sitting in” is to participate in a working group\, as a guest\, usually to play a couple of songs. This usually occurs at the invitation of someone in the band. This is how Jazz Musicians typically audition and introduce one another. Every working musician has a story about when they “sat in” and either got or didn’t get a gig. It is an essential skill for anyone pursuing a career as a Jazz Musician. \n \nThe mission of this performance series is to provide a formal opportunity for music students to sit in with professional Jazz Musicians\, which aims to help teach students performance skills and confidence building that is not available in the classroom or open mic jam sessions. Students can just show up with their instruments although we prefer some advanced notice via our online signup sheet. \n  \nAll concerts are free\, ADA Accessible\, and open to the public!

DESCRIPTION:For as long as he can remember music has been a part of Kevin Gamble’s life. One of his first experiences with music was playing the piano at his uncle’s church as a kid. Gospel\, along with listening to Jazz\, Funk\, country\, Soul\, and HipHop growing up definitely shaped his musical style as an artist. After years of sharpening his skills on piano and finishing his music education in 2018\, he decided in 2019 to form his fusion group KG4. While playing alongside some of Minnesota’s most talented musicians\, Kevin’s band infuses soulful\, jazzy and funky melodies and grooves that will be sure to get a crowd moving.

DESCRIPTION:6-7pm Dan Gjelten – 6 & 12 String Solos! \nDan Gjelten has been playing acoustic fingerstyle guitar since he was fourteen\, living in Iowa and copying Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey.  Since then\, his primary inspirations have been Doc Watson\, John Fahey and Leo Kottke. He plays several of his own arrangements of hymns\, though he is not religious. \n7-9pm Talking Strings – Instrumental Trio ”Reunion”! \nPavel Jany <https://pjanymusic.com/> leads the “Talking Strings” in addition to having founded several international jazz projects on the Twin Cities’ music scene\, including the Brazilian jazz ensemble “Ticket To Brazil”\, jazz/fusion group “Global Jazz Collegium”\, co-founder of Duo CORDA and occasionally performs and records with other local and international artists.  His long musical journey encompasses many various styles\, enriched by influences from East European Romani music of his native Czechoslovakia\, to the works of jazz fusion guitarists\, and many Brazilian guitar masters. His three year stay in West Africa and his travels to Brazil and other South American countries deepened his interest in Afro-Brazilian and Latin music. \nOne of the Midwest’s most sought after jazz violinists and pan-musical stylists\, Gary Schulte is a master improvisor and performance composer to whom Stephane Grappelli gave his most sincere blessing.  His ability to interface with musical styles of all genres is unique among violinists and well known to the Twin Cities music community.  He has gigged with some of the greatest artists of the Gypsy Jazz genre\, including guitarist legend Dorado Schmitt\, as well as classical improvisation with harpsichord master Layton James to the avant-garde with David Byrne\, and extensive collaborative work with many theatre and vocal groups. \nMatt Senjem <https://mattsenjem.com/> is a versatile bassist originally from Rochester\, MN\, and key contributor to the Twin Cities music scene for over 20 years.  With a strong foundation in jazz from the University of Minnesota\, he has performed and recorded extensively across various genres. In addition to bass\, he plays trombone and other instruments\, and regularly performs with some of Minnesota’s most talented and hard working musicians and bands.

The troupe consists of guitarists Ryan Picone and Jose Betanzos\, violinist Danny Lentz\, and bassist Sean Roderick. \n  \nThe Red Hot Django Peppers had their premiere performance in early 2019 at Moto-I and were then asked to play at the Artists’ Showcase in May 2019. The ensemble is steadily being recognized as one of the up-and-coming hot club jazz groups in the Twin Cities.

DESCRIPTION:The MNHBC Jazz Student “SIT-IN” Performance Series \nis funded by a grant from the \nMetropolitan Regional Arts Council and the St. Paul Cultural Star. \n  \nWhat is “Sitting-In”?  \nSitting in is not the same as a “jam session”. A musician’s definition of “sitting in” is to participate in a working group\, as a guest\, usually to play a couple of songs. This usually occurs at the invitation of someone in the band. This is how Jazz Musicians typically audition and introduce one another. Every working musician has a story about when they “sat in” and either got or didn’t get a gig. It is an essential skill for anyone pursuing a career as a Jazz Musician. \n  \nThe mission of this performance series is to provide a formal opportunity for music students to sit in with professional Jazz Musicians\, which aims to help teach students performance skills and confidence building that is not available in the classroom or open mic jam sessions. Students can just show up with their instruments although we prefer some advanced notice via our online signup sheet. \n  \nAll concerts are free\, ADA Accessible\, and open to the public! \n
