DESCRIPTION:6-7pm Dan Gjelten – 6 & 12 String Solos! \nDan Gjelten has been playing acoustic fingerstyle guitar since he was fourteen\, living in Iowa and copying Peter Yarrow and Paul Stookey.  Since then\, his primary inspirations have been Doc Watson\, John Fahey and Leo Kottke. He plays several of his own arrangements of hymns\, though he is not religious. \n7-9pm Talking Strings – Instrumental Trio ”Reunion”! \nPavel Jany <https://pjanymusic.com/> leads the “Talking Strings” in addition to having founded several international jazz projects on the Twin Cities’ music scene\, including the Brazilian jazz ensemble “Ticket To Brazil”\, jazz/fusion group “Global Jazz Collegium”\, co-founder of Duo CORDA and occasionally performs and records with other local and international artists.  His long musical journey encompasses many various styles\, enriched by influences from East European Romani music of his native Czechoslovakia\, to the works of jazz fusion guitarists\, and many Brazilian guitar masters. His three year stay in West Africa and his travels to Brazil and other South American countries deepened his interest in Afro-Brazilian and Latin music. \nOne of the Midwest’s most sought after jazz violinists and pan-musical stylists\, Gary Schulte is a master improvisor and performance composer to whom Stephane Grappelli gave his most sincere blessing.  His ability to interface with musical styles of all genres is unique among violinists and well known to the Twin Cities music community.  He has gigged with some of the greatest artists of the Gypsy Jazz genre\, including guitarist legend Dorado Schmitt\, as well as classical improvisation with harpsichord master Layton James to the avant-garde with David Byrne\, and extensive collaborative work with many theatre and vocal groups. \nMatt Senjem <https://mattsenjem.com/> is a versatile bassist originally from Rochester\, MN\, and key contributor to the Twin Cities music scene for over 20 years.  With a strong foundation in jazz from the University of Minnesota\, he has performed and recorded extensively across various genres. In addition to bass\, he plays trombone and other instruments\, and regularly performs with some of Minnesota’s most talented and hard working musicians and bands.

DESCRIPTION:Purpose \nOverview: 2024 MetroNOME Youth Jazz Orchestra \nTo provide a high quality week-long program for youth jazz musicians at an accessible price. Program includes a full day of rehearsal\, followed by a final performance the next day. Students will have the opportunity to play in a jazz orchestra\, and develop as both ensemble players and improvisers. \nEligible Students \nThis program is not auditioned\, however students will be asked to summarize previous performance experience. These are the criteria for eligible students: \n– Student plays one of the following instruments: alto sax\, tenor sax\, bari sax\, trumpet\, trombone\, guitar*\, piano\, bass\, drum set \n– Student can provide their own instrument (except piano and drums) \n– Student are in grades 8-12 \n– Student has least three years of experience on the instrument they’ll be playing \nfor the program \nThe program can accommodate: \n– Two alto saxophonists \n– Two tenor saxophonists \n– One bari saxophonist \n– Four trumpet players \n– Four trombonists \n– One guitarist* \n– 2 pianists \n– 2 bassists \n– 2 drummers \nProgram is able to accommodate an extra horn or two if there is interest. Program cannot accommodate extra rhythm section players. \n*guitar students must be able to read notes on a staff and chord symbols. There will be no tablature provided. \nSchedule \nProgram dates: November 16th \nRehearsal from 9am-3pm\, with breaks for lunch (and sectionals?)
