SUMMARY:MetroNOME  Foundation Youth Jazz Honors Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Purpose \nOverview: 2024 MetroNOME Youth Jazz Orchestra \nTo provide a high quality week-long program for youth jazz musicians at an accessible price. Program includes a full day of rehearsal\, followed by a final performance the next day. Students will have the opportunity to play in a jazz orchestra\, and develop as both ensemble players and improvisers. \nEligible Students \nThis program is not auditioned\, however students will be asked to summarize previous performance experience. These are the criteria for eligible students: \n– Student plays one of the following instruments: alto sax\, tenor sax\, bari sax\, trumpet\, trombone\, guitar*\, piano\, bass\, drum set \n– Student can provide their own instrument (except piano and drums) \n– Student are in grades 8-12 \n– Student has least three years of experience on the instrument they’ll be playing \nfor the program \nThe program can accommodate: \n– Two alto saxophonists \n– Two tenor saxophonists \n– One bari saxophonist \n– Four trumpet players \n– Four trombonists \n– One guitarist* \n– 2 pianists \n– 2 bassists \n– 2 drummers \nProgram is able to accommodate an extra horn or two if there is interest. Program cannot accommodate extra rhythm section players. \n*guitar students must be able to read notes on a staff and chord symbols. There will be no tablature provided. \nSchedule \nProgram dates: November 16th \nRehearsal from 9am-3pm\, with breaks for lunch (and sectionals?) November 17th \nFinal performance from 2-3pm \nRehearsals and performance will be held in Fingal’s Cave at MetroNOME Brewery. \nMetroNOME Brewery 385 Broadway Street St. Paul\, MN 55101 Entrance on Broadway \nCost to Participants \nThe program will cost students $50.00 to participate\, regardless of how many sessions they attend. This is a far cheaper rate than similar programs. \nSign up will run through the MetroNOME website. \nStudents who cannot afford the program but would like to participate can reach out – MetroNOME is committed to supporting underprivileged youth in the Twin Cities and will find a way to help out.

DESCRIPTION:Adam Wolff has been playing the piano most of his life. He grew up in New York and Chicago\, and has been \nliving in California for the last 30 years. \nWhile in New York\, Wolff studied extensively with Barry Harris\, Mike Longo (Musical Director for Dizzy \nGillespie) and Kenny Werner (Author of Effortless Mastery and a global music legend). He also performed and \nrecorded with many great jazz players including Victor Lewis\, Calvin Hill\, Rebecca Franks\, and others. He was \nespecially fortunate to record with two of Ahmad Jamal’s drummers: Vernel Fournier (credited with the iconic \ndrumbeat used in Jamal’s recording of “Poinciana” in the 1950’s) and Frank Gant\, who was part of the great \n“Awakenings” album. \nAdam Wolff’s music has excitement and swinging\, soulful\, creative musical expression. His groups rely on a \nhigh degree of listening and creativity\, making for unique arrangements of their music each performance. \nWolff played at the Metronome Brewery in the spring of 2023 to a packed house. He is looking forward to a \nreturn engagement\, and is bringing two of the Twin City’s finest musicians for this year’s event: Tom Lewis on \nbass and Reid Kennedy on drums. \n“I’ve listened to Adam many times over the years in San Diego. DESCRIPTION:Thirty-five years ago\, Classica Chamber Players began as the Hill House Chamber Players\, performing Parlor Concerts at the James J. Hill House. We remain devoted to the charm of intimate venues\, offering audiences a close encounter with the music. \nJulie Ayer\, violinist and founder of the Classica Chamber Players (formerly Hill House Chamber Players)\, was assistant principal second violin with the Minnesota Orchestra for 36 years. She studied violin with world renowned Josef Gingold at Indiana University where she earned a master’s degree. Julie is the author of More than Meets the Ear: How Symphony Musicians Made Labor History\, published in 2005\, and in 2023 she published her second book\, Denying the Silence\, A Chronicle of Resilience That Saved the World-Renowned Minnesota Orchestra. \nPianist Mary Jo Gothmann enjoys a varied career as a chamber musician\, soloist\, opera coach and organist. She performs frequently with the Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and has worked for the Metropolitan Opera\, Santa Fe Opera\, and Minnesota Opera companies. Mary Jo is a sought after chamber music partner\, playing with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota\, Colonial Chamber Music Series\, Bakken Trio\, JOYA in Anoka and Lakes Area Music Festival. \nCellist Sally Dorer is a member of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra and performs frequently with the Minnesota Orchestra. She has performed extensively with many chamber groups throughout the country\, and has been a member of the New Mexico Symphony\, the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra\, and the Florida West Coast Symphony. She has also performed at many summer music festivals\, including Tanglewood\, Colorado Music Festival\, the Banff Centre\, and Sarasota Music Festival. Sally studied at the New England Conservatory with Timothy Eddy.

DESCRIPTION:Charles Gorczynski Tango Quartet is a Minneapolis-based quartet dedicated to contemporary and traditional Argentine tango music. The ensemble is known for cutting- edge original tango music\, and for championing the work of contemporary tango composers. Bandoneonist and composer Charles Gorczynski works in contemporary tango and music production. He is the director of Minneapolis-based Twin Cities Tango Collective\, the bandleader of Redwood Tango Ensemble and Charles Gorczynski Tango Quartet\, and has worked as bandoneonist for dozens of tango projects including Mariano Barreiro Tango Trio\, Alejandro Ziegler Cuarteto\, Maldito Tango Duo\, Maxi Larrea Trio\, and Los Tangueros Del Oeste. He has toured North America and Europe extensively to support original tango albums\, most recently releasing the album “We Become The Night Sky” recorded by 12-piece tango ensemble based in San Francisco. DESCRIPTION:6-9pm Papa John Kostad\, Dean Harrington & Dean Mikkelson – Solos\, Duos & Trio! \nPapa John Kolstad has been performing for more than 50 years\, blazing a musical trail across the United States and Europe. He performed regularly on The Prairie Home Companion radio show\, has been a featured performer at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.  In 2022 Papa John was formally inducted into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame.  He is an accomplished musician\, a fine blues singer and songwriter\, as well as a stellar picker on both 6 and 12 string guitar.  \nDean Harrington earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the U of MN and was a first prize winner in the Schubert Club student scholarship competition. For the last two decades he has been performing music with his own band Mill City Hot Club and other local groups playing swing\, gypsy jazz\, tango\, New Orleans jazz and more. He has been a guitar teacher for over 25 years at K & S Conservatory of Music and more recently The Music Lab and Mount Olivet School of Music in Minneapolis. \nDean Mikkelson has been performing around the twin cities area for over the last twenty years often leading his group Deano and the Dinosaurs. He has also performed with The Mill City Hot Club and recorded with Papa John Kolstad and the Hot Club of East Lake. As a footnote to another Dean guitar master\, he was inspired to pursue the guitar after hearing Dean Granros in 1970.

DESCRIPTION:The Jazz Bridge Project Minneapolis \nThe premise of the Jazz Bridge Project\, started by the father and son team of guitarist\, Roger Johnson\, and flautist\, Rajiah Johnson\, is to provide playing opportunities for a variety of musicians\, which \nincorporates the bridging of various jazz talents known locally and nationally. \nA native of Upstate New York\, guitarist\, Roger Johnson grew up hearing great organists from \nJack McDuff to Jimmy Smith. Despite the great Guitar players of the era – Grant Green\, Kenny Burrell\, Pat Martino\, and West Montgomery – Roger was heavily influenced by John Coltrane and the 1960’s modal players. \nSon\, Rajiah Johnson (flute) has performed with the late saxophonist\, Steve Lacy and late organist\, Jack McDuff and recorded with hip-hop band\, Atmosphere and Keston and Westdal\, among others. Also a woodwind repair technician\, Rajiah studied at the University of Connecticut\, Concordia and Minnesota State Technical College. While living and playing in Connecticut\, Roger and Rajiah experienced crossing paths\, sitting in with upcoming jazz musicians from Vincent Herring\, Nat Reeves\, Carl Allen and others. \nJoining the Jazz Bridge Project for a Friday\, October 4\, 2024 Jazz Gig at the Metronome Brewery is \nAbebi Stafford (Keyboard) and Kenne Thomas (Drums). Both musicians are locally known prolific  jazz artist with exceptional Jazz credentials respectively. Abebi’s work can be heard on Apple Music\, Spotify. \nKenne Thomas has extensive music credentials. Drummer\, composer and author\, Kenne Thomas is the son of Chicago’s bebop saxophonist\, Jimmy “Bouncy” Whitehead. Kenne began his musical career in his hometown of Chicago\, performing for notable musicians\, Jodie Christian\, Ari Brown\, Adam Rudolph the Charles Walton big Band\, and the Black Artist Group. Kenne has performed in Japan\, Minnesota and venues throughout the country. \nThe Jazz Bridge Projects’ Facebook page features Athelene Johnson waiting on the Hennepin Avenue Bridge Minneapolis.
