SUMMARY:MN Guitar Society Monthly FREE Concert - Papa & the Deans!
DESCRIPTION:6-9pm Papa John Kostad\, Dean Harrington & Dean Mikkelson – Solos\, Duos & Trio! \nPapa John Kolstad has been performing for more than 50 years\, blazing a musical trail across the United States and Europe. He performed regularly on The Prairie Home Companion radio show\, has been a featured performer at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.  In 2022 Papa John was formally inducted into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame.  He is an accomplished musician\, a fine blues singer and songwriter\, as well as a stellar picker on both 6 and 12 string guitar.  \nDean Harrington earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the U of MN and was a first prize winner in the Schubert Club student scholarship competition. For the last two decades he has been performing music with his own band Mill City Hot Club and other local groups playing swing\, gypsy jazz\, tango\, New Orleans jazz and more. He has been a guitar teacher for over 25 years at K & S Conservatory of Music and more recently The Music Lab and Mount Olivet School of Music in Minneapolis. \nDean Mikkelson has been performing around the twin cities area for over the last twenty years often leading his group Deano and the Dinosaurs. He has also performed with The Mill City Hot Club and recorded with Papa John Kolstad and the Hot Club of East Lake. As a footnote to another Dean guitar master\, he was inspired to pursue the guitar after hearing Dean Granros in 1970.

DESCRIPTION:The Jazz Bridge Project Minneapolis \nThe premise of the Jazz Bridge Project\, started by the father and son team of guitarist\, Roger Johnson\, and flautist\, Rajiah Johnson\, is to provide playing opportunities for a variety of musicians\, which \nincorporates the bridging of various jazz talents known locally and nationally. \nA native of Upstate New York\, guitarist\, Roger Johnson grew up hearing great organists from \nJack McDuff to Jimmy Smith. Despite the great Guitar players of the era – Grant Green\, Kenny Burrell\, Pat Martino\, and West Montgomery – Roger was heavily influenced by John Coltrane and the 1960’s modal players. \nSon\, Rajiah Johnson (flute) has performed with the late saxophonist\, Steve Lacy and late organist\, Jack McDuff and recorded with hip-hop band\, Atmosphere and Keston and Westdal\, among others. Also a woodwind repair technician\, Rajiah studied at the University of Connecticut\, Concordia and Minnesota State Technical College. While living and playing in Connecticut\, Roger and Rajiah experienced crossing paths\, sitting in with upcoming jazz musicians from Vincent Herring\, Nat Reeves\, Carl Allen and others. \nJoining the Jazz Bridge Project for a Friday\, October 4\, 2024 Jazz Gig at the Metronome Brewery is \nAbebi Stafford (Keyboard) and Kenne Thomas (Drums). Both musicians are locally known prolific  jazz artist with exceptional Jazz credentials respectively. Abebi’s work can be heard on Apple Music\, Spotify. \nKenne Thomas has extensive music credentials. Drummer\, composer and author\, Kenne Thomas is the son of Chicago’s bebop saxophonist\, Jimmy “Bouncy” Whitehead. Kenne began his musical career in his hometown of Chicago\, performing for notable musicians\, Jodie Christian\, Ari Brown\, Adam Rudolph the Charles Walton big Band\, and the Black Artist Group. Kenne has performed in Japan\, Minnesota and venues throughout the country. \nThe Jazz Bridge Projects’ Facebook page features Athelene Johnson waiting on the Hennepin Avenue Bridge Minneapolis.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to The Waves! \nThe Waves is a revelry of poets and musicians performing a vibrant mix of surprising new work. \nHannah Arendt said\, “The new always happens against overwhelming odds.” At every Waves event\, we overcome these odds by cultivating a space that is informal\, intimate\, unpredictable\, improvisatory\, cross-disciplinary and genre-agnostic. \nWe envision a cultural landscape where all artists are supported and inspired to break with the past and create something new. \nThe Waves will be at MetroNOME Brewery on June 23rd from 7 to 9. Your hosts will be Paula Cisewski and Maura Bosch. The lineup will include poets Michael Bazzett and Moheb Soliman\, and multi-instrumentalists Ellen Lease\, James Holdman\, Jeff Johnson\, Mike Ethen\, Patti Cudd and Pat O’Keefe.

DESCRIPTION:Flutist Catherine Ramirez has captivated listeners from her desert roots along the U.S. Southern border to audiences around the world. Winner of three international competition prizes in Italy\, a New York Recital Debut\, and a McKnight Fellowship for Musicians\, she recently won a Sphinx MPower Artist Grant. As a soloist and chamber musician\, she has performed at such venues as the Teatro del Giglio in Italy\, Beijing Concert Hall\, The Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage\, and Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall\, as well as in such varied locations as public schools\, mental health clinics\, rural libraries\, and urban artist lofts. Equally at home with orchestras\, Catherine has performed with the Sunriver Music Festival\, Vermont Mozart Festival\, El Paso Symphony\, Juarez Symphony (Mexico)\, Minnesota Sinfonia\, Minnesota Opera\, Minnesota Orchestra\, and The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. \nA dedicated educator\, she holds a Special Appointment as Artist-in-Residence (Flute) at St. Olaf College (MN)\, has been an adjudicator for the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition\, and has taught youth to graduate flute students in the U.S.\, Italy\, Colombia\, and China. Catherine has also mentored young adults through the National Flute Association and Posse Foundation. Her performances have been broadcast on WFMT\, KUHF and MPR radio\, and her research on optimal musical communication has been featured on the cover of The Flutist Quarterly. Through all these endeavors\, Catherine aims to invite hope\, connection\, and inspiration through the power of music. \nIt all started with supportive Colombian and Mexican-American parents\, as she grew up in the U.S.-Mexico border city of El Paso\, Texas. Starting the flute in sixth grade public school band\, Catherine’s love for music-making and the flute led to private flute lessons at age 18\, and performance degrees from Occidental College (BA)\, the Boccherini Music Institute (Italy) (Honors Diploma)\, CUNY Queens College (MA)\, Yale University (MM)\, and Rice University (DMA).
