DESCRIPTION:The Brahms Letters\, A THINGIE by Rory Thompson \n  \nI am getting pretty excited. On Sunday it will be TWO WEEKS to my next THINGIE.  I have loved presenting these programs for quite a few years\, now. I like the informality\, and some unexpected surprises that often define the Thingie…the NON RECITAL. \n  \nThis November 23 at 2:30 I am going to do a program called The Brahms Letters. The whole idea is simply a narrative of Brahms’ life\, specifically his relationship to Clara Schumann\, a woman that he loved from the time he was 20 years old. \n  \nThink of the Biopic movies that have been so popular over the years\, telling stories of Ray Charles\, Elvis\, the Beatles\, Elton John\, and the latest… Bruce Springsteen. What these movies did was to humanize the musicians. The story was a vehicle to hear the music\, while casting that very music in a different light. \n  \nI want to do that with Brahms. I have to believe that his life shaped his music. And if his love of Clara was a central part of his life\, then music that he sent her along with love letters was born of that part of his life.

SlovCzech returns to MetroNOME\, with special guests Soul Trouvère. \nSlovCzech is an Eastern European folk-rock band based in the Twin Cities and was founded in 2008 by Petr Bachan (electric & acoustic guitar) from Czech Republic along with Jozef Klobusnik (accordion) from Slovakia. Other members include Mary Larew (violin)\, Dan Yoon (bass guitar) and homegrown Minnesota members Sara Jeddeloh (violin) and Michael Leville (percussion). \nSoul Trouvère is a Minneapolis Country & Eastern band\, performing original and folk music from Eastern Europe and the Americas. Colleen Bertsch is a violinist who studied and performed music in the Transylvanian countryside\, and is a co-founder of the Minneapolis Balkan party band Orkestar Bez Ime. A founding member of the New Orleans band the Zydepunks\, Juan Küffner performs on piano accordion. Together they sing in multiple languages\, including Yiddish\, Romanian\, Ukrainian\, Spanish\, French\, German\, Boyash\, Romani\, Sorbian\, Serbian\, Russian\, & English. \n

Aidan Firchow\, Colin Fitzsimmons\, Matt Healy\, Nathan Klaers\, and Trevor Loewe met at the University of Minnesota in a jazz combo under the direction of Phil Hey. Since then they have been writing music and playing around the Twin Cities in clubs\, museums\, backyards\, and basements alike. Green Line plays a combination of original music and arrangements that bring a dynamic\, funk sound to tunes rooted in and inspired by the jazz tradition.

DESCRIPTION:6-7pm  Guitarra Mike \n\n\nGuitarra Mike (aka Mike Salovich) was born in the tradition of American Primitive Guitar – the original percussive metal fingerpicking of Leo Kottke\, Peter Lang\, John Fahey.  Mike composes original music and now with a million YouTube views has some notoriety in Latin America.   At this Guitar Society gig Mike will go back in time and slide on giant metal fingerpicks and a bulky polymer thumb pick to pound out original guitar songs\, and share his experience of being steeped in the oral tradition of American Primitive Guitar with Mark Lang – Peter Lang’s long lost swashbuckling genius brother. Guitarra Mike just released a new album of guitar music called “Rosa Mystica” with washboard mystic Mikkel Beckmen\, available on all streaming platforms. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n7-9pm “The DEANS’ List” – solos\, duos and trios\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuitarist and composer Dean Granros resides in WI\, USA. Over the past 50 years Dean has developed a unique voice on the guitar. Of Dean’s playing\, New York Times jazz critic\, Nate Chinen\, wrote: “It was..inarguable in its logic\, and to my ears it definitely qualified as something new.” As soloist\, Mr. Granros explores the intersections of world music and jazz to create a tapestry of musical color and mood.\n\n\n\n\n\nDean Harrington earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the University of MN and was a first prize winner in the Schubert Club scholarship competition. For the last two decades he has been exclusively a jazz musician performing with his own band Mill City Hot Club and other local groups. He is proud of his work as a guitar teacher for over 30 years at K & S Conservatory of Music in Woodbury\, The Music Lab in Minneapolis\, and Mount Olivet School of Music in Edina.\n\nDean Mikkelson has been performing around the area for over the last twenty years often leading his group Deano and the Dinosaurs. He has also performed with The Mill City Hot Club and recorded with Papa John Kolstad and the Hot Club of East Lake. As a footnote\, he was inspired to pursue the guitar after hearing Dean Granros in 1970.

There are now over 100 people involved in combos and classes\, learning about and performing Americas original art form – Jazz.\nThese concerts are free and open to the public and you will be surprised by the level and variety of songs these groups will present.\nSO come to Metronome\, grab a beer\, head down to Fingal’s Cave\, and hear some great music on\nOctober 29th and 30th at 7pm\nNovember 28th and 29th at 2pm

We’re Prairie Fire Choir.\nPrairie Fire Choir (PFC) is a Twin Cities-based\, treble-voiced\, acapella group that welcomes women (cis and trans) and non-binary singers to raise their collective voices. \nFormed in 2010\, PFC offers a supportive\, fun\, and educational environment to explore musical passions and give back through partnerships with causes close to our hearts. PFC performs original music and arrangements of folk\, pop\, and rock songs. The choir is a self-directed and democratically run non-profit. PFC has 70 members and performs at a wide variety of events and venues throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. \nWe sing together to build a more joyful\, just\, and connected community. \nWe value fairness\, justice\, equity\, respect\, openness\, inclusivity and authenticity. We amplify causes including but not limited to social justice\, women’s rights\, racial justice\, environmental justice\, and LGBTQ rights.

SUMMARY:The Adam Wolff Trio
DESCRIPTION:Adam Wolff is a jazz pianist based in San Diego\, California. He plays with a strong \ngroove/blues element\, in the style of Gene Harris. Ahmad Jamal is also a strong \ninfluence- while living New York City for many years\, he had the good fortune to \nstudy and record with two of Jamal’s drummers. His travels brought him to the \nTwin Cities several years ago\, and he started playing gigs with local musicians here \nin 2023 at Metronome\, Crooners\, and other venues. \nThis year he will be re-joining forces with the great bassist Tom Lewis\, and will be \nplaying for the first time with the legendary Nathan Norman. These two musicians \nhave been a part of the jazz scene here for many years\, and Wolff is looking \nforward to the creative and synergistic results combining these three musicians in \nFingal’s Cave. (Fingal’s has one of the best pianos in town\, if you didn’t know!) \nExpect to hear swinging and soulful jazz with a mix of jazz classics\, songs from the \nGreat American Songbook\, and a few originals.
