DESCRIPTION:Fuzzy Math has been a fixture on the Twin Cities scene for nearly 15 years\, led by keyboardist-composer Mark Vandermyde and featuring some of the finest players around (Andrew Schwandt on tenor sax\, Matt Peterson on bass and Haralds Bondaris on drums).  They have released 5 CDs\, each offering a new iteration their uniquely eclectic blend of original jazz and creative pop covers for which the StarTribune once named them to its Best of Minnesota list for “best jazz act for people bored with jazz”.  Racket (successor to City Pages arts beat) called them “fluid as hell…generously melodic…alternately tender and brawny…nuanced…this is jazz that never gets too far out but never dawdles too close to home – a genuine sweet spot.”  Their goal is to create music that’s interesting\, accessible\, and fun…truly something for everyone.

SUMMARY:CADENZA ALL-STARS
DESCRIPTION:Cadenza All Stars is a local Twin Cities Jazz Quartet made up of private music instructors at Cadenza Music in St. Paul\, performing standards and originals. These talented jazz performers have long been stalwarts in the local jazz scene. Saxophonist Jeff King can also be seen performing with the Kurt Jorgensen Band. He has released recordings under his own name\, and with the powerhouse trio “King Fletcher Woods”. Guitarist Joel Shapira is a nationally acclaimed musician and is a leader and/or member of multiple top Twin Cities’ jazz ensembles. He has also recorded several albums; a recent gem is his “Triple Bridge” recording. Drummer Eron Woods performs regularly with multiple Twin Cities jazz groups including funky jazz group “Pocket Groovers”\, and has enjoyed an eclectic career\, working on cruise ships\, touring with circuses\, and performing with flamenco groups. He can be heard on recordings including albums from Nick Haas Trio\, Grant Hart\, and Mandragora Tango. Erik Fratzke is a composer/performer/educator based in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Best known for his work as the bassist of Happy Apple\, he also leads his own quartet\, Fake Accent. He is also a member of Craig Taborn’s Junk Magic\, and Cory Healey’s Beautiful Sunshine Band. As a guitarist\, Erik is a member of The Dave King Trucking Company\, the avant-metal group Abhorrent Expanse\, Scott Miller’s Fifth Column Ensemble\, The Gang Font feat. Greg Norton\, as well as the leader of the instrumental rock group Zebulon Pike. His compositions have been performed and recorded by the new music group Zeitgeist. Erik has performed/recorded with Tim Berne\, Ethan Iverson\, Adam Levy\, Michel Portal\, Rhys Chatham\, Airto\, Benoit Delbec\, and Yoshida Tatsuya (Ruins).

DESCRIPTION:The Green Line Quintet returns to Fingal’s Cave. \nThe Green Line Quintet\, named after the Green Line Lightrail that runs through the University of Minnesota’s campus\, is a group of friends and musicians dedicated to creating and performing music together. After a very successful year of playing together in the university’s jazz program\, all 5 members decided to continue the group outside of school\, hence The Green Line Quintet was born. They are constantly seeking to explore and incorporate other genres into their repertoire\, providing fresh takes on old tunes\, and bringing more modern songs into the jazz wheelhouse. The Green Line Quintet has been playing together for just over 2 years\, and they don’t plan to stop any time soon.

SUMMARY:DAKOTA ANDERSEN
DESCRIPTION:Dakota Andersen is a vocalist\, songwriter\, arranger\, and educator based in Minneapolis. A newcomer to the Twin Cities\, he is quickly becoming established in the jazz scene with performances at Crooners Supper Club\, the Hook and Ladder\, Volstead’s Emporium\, and Resource. Before his move to Minnesota\, Andersen graduated from the University of North Texas with a master’s degree in vocal jazz studies. While at UNT\, he directed one of four vocal jazz ensembles\, taught classes on vocal jazz style\, and maintained a small private studio of jazz voice majors. Additionally\, he sang with the university’s first ever Latin jazz combo\, as the featured vocalist with the Three O’Clock Lab Band\, and with UNT’s premiere vocal jazz ensemble\, Jazz Singers. He also performed frequently at local venues in the Dallas-Fort Worth area\, such as the Balcony Club\, the Kitchen Cafe\, Steve’s Wine Bar\, Hearsay Arlington\, and Mercury Chophouse. Past collaborations include Kurt Elling\, Sinne Eeg\, Darmon Meader\, Laila Biali\, Miguel Zenón\, Myra Melford\, Carl Allen\, and the One O’Clock Lab Band. His original composition and newest arrangement for vocal jazz ensemble\, “Turn That Frown Upside Down\,” is now published and available for purchase on vocal jazz arranger Kerry Marsh’s website\, kerrymarsh.com. \nIn addition to his work in vocal jazz\, Andersen is also an active choral singer in the Twin Cities. He is a contracted vocalist with the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers under the direction of Philip Brunelle as well as with the Minnesota Chorale under the direction of Kathy Saltzman Romey. During the day\, he works as a Mentoring Program Associate for BestPrep\, a local nonprofit that provides educational programs for students with the goal of bridging the gap between classroom learning and workplace skills. Dakota is originally from Fairfield\, Iowa and earned his undergraduate degree in choral music education from the University of Northern Iowa.

DESCRIPTION:We are a Minneapolis-based quartet consisting of Mike Wilson on saxes and flute\, Mona Wong on saxes\, Scott Anderson on electric bass\, keyboards and bass clarinet and Brandon Sisneroz on drums. \nStarting from classic ’60s hard bop and post-bop — think Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers\, Horace Silver\, or the second great Miles Davis quintet — plus a bit of ’70s funk-fusion\, our style has taken shape with an album’s worth of originals\, as well as signature mashups of classic jazz standards with popular rock\, funk and show tunes. \n\nMIKE WILSON \nALTO & BARITONE SAXOPHONES\, FLUTE \nMike studies chimpanzees and human evolution in his day job at the University of Minnesota. He played alto and tenor sax in various groups through college\, but started searching for more portable instruments when he began doing fieldwork in Africa\, eventually accumulating a clarinet\, soprano sax and flute. He previously played with the JD Express\, The Jazz Freeloaders\, The Demonic Males and The Prospectors. \n\n\n\nMONA WONG \nSOPRANO\, ALTO & TENOR SAXOPHONES \nMona has performed in the Twin Cities since the ’90s in an original R&B funk band\, The Curbfeelers\, winning a MN Music award for Best R&B group\, opening for the Ohio Players\, Average White Band and After 7. She has performed with the Violent Femmes as a member of the Horns of Dilemma. Mona studied with Joe Viola at Berklee College of Music. Her musical influences include Phil Woods\, Art Pepper\, Gerald Albright and Ella Fitzgerald. \n\n\n\nSCOTT ANDERSON \nELECTRIC BASSES\, KEYBOARDS\, BASS CLARINET \nScott has been obsessed with audio recording since he received his first cassette recorder at age 7. While working towards his B.A. in music history\, he played clarinet and saxes in band\, jazz band and musical theater. After college his professional path veered into web technology\, but he continued making music\, playing bass in several rock bands in Minneapolis and Atlanta and honing his audio production skills. \n\n\n\nBRANDON SISNEROZ \nDRUMS & PERCUSSION \nBrandon grew up in Southern California and toured the country as a musician before settling in Minneapolis in the 2000s. When he’s not building stage sets\, reconfiguring climbing walls\, fabricating percussion instruments\, making wine or pursuing one of his other many and diverse interests\, Brandon is behind the kit for 32nd Street Jazz\, bringing a polyrhythmic fluidity to the drums that goes well beyond simply keeping time.

The ensemble is known for cutting-edge original tango music\, and for \nchampioning the work of contemporary tango composers. \nMinneapolis-based composer and bandoneonist Charles Gorczynski works in contemporary tango\, new \nmusic\, and studio production. He leads the acclaimed modern tango outfits Charles Gorczynski Tango \nQuartet and Redwood Tango Ensemble\, and is the director of the Twin Cities Tango Collective. \nCharles is a deeply established musician and community organizer with a distinct voice in creative new \nmusic\, stemming from his upbringing in jazz/improvised music and decades of tango composition and \nperformance. His projects Redwood Tango Ensemble and Colorlist have toured North America and \nEurope extensively\, playing hundreds of performances annually and producing four albums of original \ncontemporary tango music. Charles has premiered his compositions with Chamber Music Northwest \nFestival and the San Francisco International Arts Festival\, worked with the Buenos Aires-based Tango Sin \nFin organization for their programs with Reed College\, and is regularly commissioned for new works for \ntango chamber ensemble. As bandoneonist he has worked with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra\, \nCheyenne Symphony Orchestra\, Chicago Chorale\, California Symphony\, Vocal Essence\, Mason Bates’ \nMercury Soul Orchestra\, and many other orchestral and chamber music organizations. Charles has \nrecorded and toured with international tango projects\, including Mariano Barreiro Tango Trio\, Tango BC \nQuartet\, Alejandro Ziegler Cuarteto\, Maxi Larrea Trio\, Maldito Tango\, and Los Tangueros Del Oeste. \nOn the production side\, Charles is a Latin-Grammy nominated audio engineer and has produced and \ncontributed to hundreds of albums. Patricia is the former cellist of the Artaria String Quartet based in the Twin Cities and is a core member of 10th Wave Chamber Music Collective\, Kinetic Ensemble\, and Delphia Cello Quartet as well as the host of the podcast Haydn Behind the Music Stand. Jeong-Eun is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Collaborative Piano at UTSA and performs extensively throughout Texas.

DESCRIPTION:When four world class Saxophone performers become friends and form a quartet\, you have an explosion of energy\, joy and deeply wonderful music-making – you have Ancia! — Libby Larsen \nFor over thirty years the Ancia Saxophone Quartet has been sharing its passion for new music with audiences around the world through performances filled with energy\, precision\, and beauty. Ancia is excited to make their debut performance at Metronome Brewery\, presenting a concert of some of their favorite selections from recent performance seasons. \nOn the program is Trapped by UK composer Claire Cope. The quartet met Claire when they gave the American premiere of this piece last year in Madison at the LunArt Festival\, and greatly enjoyed both the piece and working with the composer. Marc Mellits’ Ex Machina\, an audience favorite in recent years\, was written in 2017 and as with much of Mellits’ writing for saxophone\, the saxophone’s history in funk and soul music is brought into his minimalist style processes by way of seemingly simple rhythmic grooves. Other engaging works on the program include Guillermo Lago’s Ciudades\, a selection from Maurice Ravel’s Quartet\, and more.
