SUMMARY:The Sam Stauning Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Sam Stauning Quartet is a new small jazz ensemble created and led by tenor saxophonist \nSam Stauning. The group consists of some of the best young musicians in the Twin Cities. The \ngroup will perform various tunes from jazz standards to newer modern tunes. \nInfo for each band member: \nSam Stauning is a 17 year old up and coming tenor saxophonist currently a part of the Dakota \nEnsemble at MacPhail. He has received mentorship from local legends such as Peter Whitman\, \nKavyesh Kaviraj\, Jack Breen\, Kevin Washington\, Zacc Harris\, Abebi Stafford\, Ian Duerr\, and \nJesse Simon to name a few. Sam has played at Berlin\, the Dakota\, Twin Cities Jazz Festival\, \nand Minneapolis Institute of Art. He has received the award of Outstanding Soloist at the Eau \nClaire Jazz Festival. \nCallum Schultz is a 17 year old bassist who has performed alongside saxophone greats Joe \nLovano\, Kenni Holmen\, and JD Allen\, and has played at numerous Twin Cities venues such as \nThe Dakota\, the Landmark Center\, the Governor’s Residence\, The Green Room\, and Berlin \nJazz Club. He is a 2025/26 MN All State musician\, and a 2025/26 YoungArts jazz bass award \nwinner. \nAtaa\, who started playing drums as a toddler under the influence of his father\, the renowned \nGhanaian percussionist Sowah Mensah\, honed his craft under mentorship from local jazz greats \nlike Kevin Washington\, Felix James\, and Kavyesh Kaviraj. He has since become a fixture in the \nlocal music scene\, performing both as a leader and sideman. \nXavier Johnson Ryan is an up-and-coming jazz pianist in the Twin Cities area. He has \nperformed at venues including Icehouse\, the Green Room\, Jazz Central Studios\, the Dakota\, \nBerlin\, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. Johnson Ryan is a longstanding member of Twin Cities \nband Half Past Midnight and has played with jazz greats Kyle Poole and Joe Lovano among \nothers. He has studied under acclaimed jazz artists Kavyesh Kaviraj\, Kevin Washington\, Jack \nBreen\, and Solomon Parham.

Currently based in Texas\, Louisiana and Minnesota\, the trio’s members collectively hold degrees from Rice University\, San Francisco Conservatory of Music\, Eastman School of Music\, University of Southern California\, and Yale University. The trio performs nationwide with a mission of exploring and expanding the piano trio repertoire while connecting through music to the world today. \nJacob holds the Assistant Principal Second Violin position at Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and is a core member of Loop38 and Kinetic Ensemble. Patricia is a Teaching Artist at Walker|West Music Academy\, a core member of Kinetic Ensemble\, 10th Wave Chamber Music Collective and Delphia Cello Quartet and the former cellist of the Artaria String Quartet. Jeong-Eun is Assistant Professor of Collaborative Piano at Louisiana State University and performs as collaborative pianist at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

SUMMARY:Steve Kenny Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Steve Kenny Quintet will play a few selections from the recently released “Blue Chunks” CD intermixed with some crowd-pleasing favorite Jazz Standards selected from the group’s multiple years of performances. There will probably be some Coltrane material as well.\n\nSteve Kenny is active in the Minnesota Jazz community as a Performer\, Composer\, and Curator. Steve is a founding member of ‘the illicit sextet’\, “Group 47”\, “What Would Monk Do?” and his own “Quartets”. Steve was the curator of a weekly Saturday Jazz series at kj’s hideaway\, and before that at the Black Dog Cafe\, producing over 400 Saturday Night Jazz shows.  in 2020\, he released “Quartets”\, on Shifting Paradigm Records. It includes original compositions played by 4 separate ensembles of Twin Cities Jazz musicians\, including a Live version of Steve Kenny’s Ghost Suite. in 2025\, Steve released another CD “Blue Chunks” at Dakota Jazz Club. This was preceded by a series of live shows exploring the compositional concept of smaller “chunks” of music arranged into mini suites.  in 2019 the national Jazz Journalists Association named Steve as a “Minnesota Jazz Hero” for his work in the Jazz community and lifelong devotion to the Idiom.\n\n\nSteve Kenny – Trumpet\nDave  Brattain – Saxophones\nBryan Nichols – Piano\nChris Bates  – Bass\nMiguel Hurtado – Drums
