SUMMARY:The Brahms Letters - Rory Thompson\, piano
DESCRIPTION:The Brahms Letters \nWe all know who Brahms IS\, but do we know anything about him… as a human? Although I \nhave loved Brahms for my lifetime\, I never knew what made him tick! \nI have gone to quite a few Biopic movies that tell about the lives of many well-known popular \nmusicians and bands. They use the music as a device to delve into the eventful lives\, the \nemotional lives of these musicians. The music helps to tell the story\, and we come away loving \nboth the musicians and the music even more than we did. \nThe Brahms Letters is my attempt to do the same\, by telling about the real events of Brahms’ \nlife\, his “trials and tribulations”. Short readings from love letters that he sent to Clara Schumann \nover decades\, and readings from Clara’s diary expose the deep emotional background to the \nfinal piano pieces from Op. 116-119\, written in the last two years of Brahms’ life. He shared \nthese pieces with Clara\, along with impassioned letters that he continued to send until her death. \nHistorical images of the people and places in which they lived and loved accompany these \nstories and pieces. I hope everyone comes away knowing the very real humans that Johannes \nand Clara were.

DESCRIPTION:Garrett Jones is a Minneapolis-based bassoonist and composer known for his cross-genre bassoon techniques and jazz bassoon recordings. His original compositions for bassoon and rhythm section bring Western classical compositional techniques to an improvisational setting. He has performed in jazz clubs in Minneapolis and Phoenix\, and has been an invited performer at the conference of the International Double Reed Society. \n            Jones will be joined by a stellar local rhythm section\, featuring: \n                        Patrick Adkins\, piano \n                        Greg Byers\, bass \n                        Ben Ehrlich\, drums \n            The quartet will be playing compositions from Jones’ previous releases\, Tributaries (2023) and Vestiges (2022)\, as well as unreleased material.

DESCRIPTION:6-9pm Founder’s Program\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Haskin Ensemble\nSteve Haskin is one of the founders of the Minnesota guitar society. He created the newsletter and the Guitarathons. He will be performing originals and jazz standards with harmonica wizard Clint Hoover who has recently returned from many years living in Pittsburgh. The ensemble also includes Michael Ziegahn\, singer and percussionist Terry Storhaug. Steve now lives in Austin\, Texas where he’s in the band the Austin Songbirds. \n \nAnthony Titus is a distinguished classical guitarist and educator who earned his B.A. from North Carolina School of the Performing Arts and his M.A. from San Diego State University. As a natural extension to his development in audio/video design\, Titus has also created a college guitar curriculum for the blind. Mr. Titus served as faculty at The University of St. Thomas\, Metro State University\, and Inver-Hills Community College where he co-developed a curriculum for a new A.F.A. degree in Music. He remains active in the classical music community through recordings and live performances.

Shepherd’s solo performances weave together 19th–20th century folklore with original compositions exploring themes of travel\, identity\, and cultural fusion\, infused with humor\, heart\, and mesmerizing improvisation. \nBorn into a Russian Jewish family in Novosibirsk\, Polina was then an active young Jewish leader in Tatarstan during the 1980s and 1990s\, as Jews in the Soviet Union began to reconnect with their roots. At just 17\, she joined Russia’s first professional klezmer band after Perestroika\, Simcha\, touring the former Soviet Union while studying her musical heritage. SUMMARY:Harry Scott Quintet
DESCRIPTION:The Harry Scott Quintet will perform one and a half hours of originals\, and new arrangements of standards. \nHarry Scott is an up and coming pianist and composer based in the Twin Cities and Chicago. Just 18\, he has performed with his Trio\, Quintet\, and solo across countless venues in the areas\, including The Dakota and Berlin. He is influenced by pianists by the likes of Sullivan Fortner\, Brad Mehldau\, and Bill Evans\, and composers such as Wayne Shorter\, Cedar Walton\, and Monk.  \n Laeton Olaleye is a rising talent in the Twin Cities jazz scene. He has performed in venues including the Dakota Jazz Club\, Crooners\, Jazz Central Studios\, MetroNOME Brewery\, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival with renowned Twin Cities artists such as Omar Abdulkarim\, Tom Lewis\, and Will Kjeer. He has also played in New York City\, Chicago\, and Louisville. Laeton was a 2025-26 Minnesota Music Educators Association All-State Jazz Band musician and has received instruction from acclaimed jazz artists such as Patrick Bartley\, Kevin Washington\, Scott Johnson\, Jack Breen\, and Kavyesh Kaviraj. Olaleye’s captivating style has been influenced by Arthur Blythe\, John Coltrane\, and Cannonball Adderley\, along with many other greats. \nMatthew Hess\, 18\, is a saxophonist from Minneapolis\, MN. He performs with various groups across the Twin Cities including Minnesota Youth Jazz Bands\, Walker West Music Academy\, and MacPhail Center for Music. He has performed at various venues across the Twin Cities. \nCallum Schultz is a 17 year old bassist who has performed alongside saxophone greats Joe Lovano\, Kenni Holmen\, and JD Allen\, and has played at numerous Twin Cities venues such as The Dakota\, the Landmark Center\, the Governor’s Residence\, The Green Room\, and Berlin Jazz Club. He is a 2025/26 MN All State musician\, and a 2025/26 YoungArts jazz bass award winner. \nPete James Johnson is drummer\, composer and producer based in the Twin Cities. He regularly performs in the local music scene and sometimes performs with award-winning national artists. When not playing\, Pete works from home as a composer and producer writing music and producing local artists.

DESCRIPTION:The Cadenza All Stars are back! \nCadenza All Stars is a local Twin Cities Jazz Quartet made up of private music instructors at Cadenza Music in St. Paul\, performing standards and originals. These talented jazz performers have long been stalwarts in the local jazz scene. Saxophonist Jeff King can also be seen performing with the Kurt Jorgensen Band. He has released recordings under his own name\, and with the powerhouse trio “King Fletcher Woods”. Guitarist Joel Shapirais a nationally acclaimed musician and is a leader and/or member of multiple top Twin Cities’ jazz ensembles. He has also recorded several albums; a recent gem is his “Triple Bridge” recording. Drummer Eron Woods performs regularly with multiple Twin Cities jazz groups including funky jazz group “Pocket Groovers”\, and has enjoyed an eclectic career\, working on cruise ships\, touring with circuses\, and performing with flamenco groups. He can be heard on recordings including albums from Nick Haas Trio\, Grant Hart\, and Mandragora Tango. Erik Fratzke is a composer/performer/educator based in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Best known for his work as the bassist of Happy Apple\, he also leads his own quartet\, Fake Accent. He is also a member of Craig Taborn’s Junk Magic\, and Cory Healey’s Beautiful Sunshine Band. As a guitarist\, Erik is a member of The Dave King Trucking Company\, the avant-metal group Abhorrent Expanse\, Scott Miller’s Fifth Column Ensemble\, The Gang Font feat. Greg Norton\, as well as the leader of the instrumental rock group Zebulon Pike. His compositions have been performed and recorded by the new music group Zeitgeist. Erik has performed/recorded with Tim Berne\, Ethan Iverson\, Adam Levy\, Michel Portal\, Rhys Chatham\, Airto\, Benoit Delbec\, and Yoshida Tatsuya (Ruins).

SUMMARY:Zeitgeist - Sounding Ground Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Join Zeitgeist and Sounding Ground artists astrid hubbard flynn\, Isaac Mayhew\, and Yan Pang for a performance of the new works they have developed through Sounding Ground. \nThe SOUNDING GROUND composer residency program provides commissioning\, development\, and production support for Minnesota composers in the early stages of their careers. SOUNDING GROUND awardees work closely with Zeitgeist over an extended period on the development and production of a significant new work created for Zeitgeist. \nastrid hubbard flynn b. 1999\, they/them) is an autistic living on Dakota land in so-called Minneapolis. Originally trained as a classical musician\, astrid studied composition at Brown University with Wang Lu\, Kristina Warren and Eric Nathan\, and their notated work has been performed by Bent Frequency\, the Kukuruz Quartet and YarnWire. They now make solo harsh noise music as Asteroid\, ambient music with Aros E-V and NYMPHS\, and synth-punk with Musicians for Birds and Related Animals\, with past and upcoming releases on Bumpy Recordings. astrid also co-facilitates Handmade Noise Fun Club with Winona Vetsch at Seward Cafe\, and works at a public library. They have been referred to as “the sonic destroyer of souls themself” (Xochi de la Luna) and their music has been likened to “a cough that never stops” (Ivan Cunningham). \nIsaac Mayhew is a composer and trumpet player based in Saint Paul\, Minnesota. He has collaborated with performers across the country including Zeitgeist\, the Rochester New Music Ensemble\, the Lawrence University Symphonic Band\, the Beltline Bones\, The _____ Experiment\, Sputter Box\, Front Porch\, and the Zenith Saxophone Quartet\, and more. In addition to his work as a composer\, Isaac is an active performer and advocate for new music. He performs with Lemonbrass\, a Twin Cities-based brass quintet dedicated to music by living Minnesota composers. As a trumpet player\, he has commissioned\, premiered\, or recorded works by Anat Spiegel\, Daniel Whitworth\, Nebal Maysaud\, Evan Williams\, Jonathan Posthuma\, Emily Boyajian\, Thomas Myrmel\, and Conner Leigh Shaw. Isaac holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Lawrence University\, where he studied with Asha Srinivasan\, Joanne Metcalf\, and Benjamin Klein. He currently serves as Executive Director of the Millennium Composers Initiative and is on the boards of RenegadeEnsemble and the Minneapolis Choir Collective.\n\n​Yan Pang Yan Pang (she/they) is a composer\, performer\, and scholar whose work centers on intercultural music creation. As a composer\, her creative practice blends Chinese folk traditions with Western operatic and music-theater forms to explore themes of resilience\, solidarity\, and immigration. Her compositions have been featured in international collections and competitions\, including For Archie\, Nowhere Home\, and The Others (Contemporary Music Score Collection\, UCLA). She is also the songwriter and music director of the album Glory Times (China Science & Cultural Audio-Video Publishing House).As a performer\, Pang frequently realizes her compositional work through performance-based and collaborative contexts. Since 2019\, she has been composing and performing original music for MIXTAPE Dance in collaboration with choreographer Jason “J-Sun” Noer and music director Stefon “Bionik” Taylor.

DESCRIPTION:Wall of Crunch is a ragtag team of musicians from Roseville Area High School. As their name suggests\, you’ll be hit with a “wall” of different varieties of jazz including swing\, blues\, funk\, fusion\, and bossa nova\, among other things. This group includes Tiago Bada Lappi on trumpet\, Lucas Betterman on Trombone\, and Lena Gehrz on Tenor Sax for horns. The rhythm sections includes Micah Sethi on Piano\, Mitchell Pederson on Bass\, Kaio Ferreira on Guitar\, and Savien Powe on drums.
